Mathematics Education in Renaissance Europe
Not all Europeans shared the tradition of mathematics education that produced rithmomachia. Italian schools in particular thought of mathematics more as we would today, as a set of tools for solving problems. By the late Renaissance this approach won out, and rithmomachia faded away. This transition helped make possible the rapid advances in mathematics that have characterized the field ever since, and I will focus on that change. But we will also want to reflect on what was lost when the study of number was no longer taught as a guide to contemplation and virtue.
